A Sage Once Said...
The last of summer’s ripe blackberries sweeten this reimagined julep featuring Nelson’s Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey. Fresh sage gives an unexpected herbal twist while the liqueur and bitters offer bright citrus and vanilla flavors. The perfect cocktail for toasting the final days of summer!
1.5 oz Nelson’s Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey
.5 oz orange liqueur
.5 oz blackberry simple syrup
2 dashes orange bitters
Fresh sage leaves
Add three sage leaves and two dashes of orange bitters to the bottom of a julep tin. Gently muddle, pulling the leaves up so the oils coat the inside of the tin. Add blackberry syrup, Licor 43 and Tennessee Whiskey. Fill about ¾ of the way with crushed ice and swizzle with a bar spoon until ingredients are combined and the outside of the tin begins to frost. Top with more crushed ice to make a “snow cone” top and garnish with additional sage.
To prepare the blackberry syrup, rinse 6 ounces of blackberries and mash them in the bottom of a saucepan. Add two cups sugar and two cups water and stir to combine. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally until the sugar is dissolved. Let the berries rest in the syrup as it cools, then fine strain. Cover and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
